Set the course record at Alameda's Mif Par Three Golf Course

Set the Course Record

First off if you haven't had a chance to play the "pitch and putt" in Alameda then you are missing out. It is a
Here's the 2nd hole
treasure of a golf experience and it will challenge you at whatever ability level you're playing at.

Each week we've started a program for golfers to set the course record for their age group and gender. So for a week if you shoot the "low score" we'll take your picture, get your name and post that along with your score and date for others in your age category to beat.

Then each week we'll start all over again, giving everyone a change to get up on our "wall of fame".

Pitch and putt may be over simplifying what this golf course offers. The holes aren't 30 or 40 yards they actually range from 85-155 yards and the greens are shaped so there are no flat spots for better drainage. Marc Logan the golf course's designer, who I call the "grass whisperer", since he is truely one of the world's leading experts in growing any grass but especially bent grass

I may lose a few of you out there that aren't geeks about putting green surfaces, but I am, because any experienced golfer knows that bent grass greens are second to none for putting surfaces. Mr. Logan is going against conventional wisdom that he can grow and then maintain bent grass in Northern California. Alameda's golf courses are going to prove to everyone that he can with his systems.

We're already really excited the conditions at the new Mif par three and the our new chipping and putting. Come out and check them out and while you're out it keep your score because you may set the course record for the week!

Get Better at Golf Fast!

We're really excited about having a new launch monitor in Alameda (radar system that measures everything to do with impact with the ball and golf club).

And you know, if you can measure it, you can improve it

Step 1: These days I'm offering what we call "club-gapping" to get golfers excited measuring and how it will catapult you're game to another level.

In club-gapping you'll hit ten balls with the clubs you want to measure.  This will give us a direction and distance profile (notice the oval in the image below, this golfer's pattern is biased to the right of the target line).

Below is this golfer's ten drives. We can see a general shape of direction, spin and trajectory.

Step 2: At first most of these numbers won't mean much to you. I'll coach you decipher them so you can make the appropriate adjustments to create your desired ball flight because there is a formula for any ball flight you wish. Let's say for instance that you want a high draw with your driver, no problem, I'd have you swing 8 degrees right with your club path and have your club face four degrees left of that path. And for the desired heighth you'd hit it on the upswing two degrees.

Funny part is, I don't care how you do your formula and nor does the radar system. Of course if you are stuck that's where I can nudge you in the right direction :)

Step 3: A few repeat trips to instill your feel-with-what's-real. And then boom, you're calling your shots!

I'm in Alameda Wednesdays through Saturdays for $125 an hour.

Keep in mind the launch monitor is the ultimate club fitting tool. So if you're looking to improve your clubs we've got most of the top brands and our pricing is competitive.

New Golf Technology to Improve Game

Hi, Kris Moe here, I've just found a new toy called Game Golf (shot tracking software, yes cyber-metrics is coming to golf). I'm fascinated to see how as a coach I can make this work with my students.

Anyone is welcome to join me for a round this Thursday at Stevinson Ranch to test it out. I'm teeing off at noon and all you have to pay is the $50 green fee and that will include range balls. Just call or text to grab a spot or two.

I'm planning on making trips down to Stevinson through the year. It is 90 miles from Alameda so it's a drive but it's truly a great golf course and has one of the top practice facilities in California! I plan having a few golf schools there through the year and they have lodging there if you want to make it an over-nighter.

BTW- we just started doing regripping at Alameda so if you like to come over I'll show you all the grips we
have, fit your hand then have one of our staff put the grips on while you putt or hit some balls (about $8 a club). You can always reach me at kmoe@greenwaygolf.com or check out our website, www.alamedagolf.com

Here's a superb video if your digging too deep of a divot or leaving the ball out to the right, Trackman Maestro on Handle Dragging-

Radar Technology is Disrupting Golf and Golfers are Going to Benefit

New radar technology is disrupting golf

With the constant advancement of technology in golf it's never been a better time to be a golfer. Improving your ball striking and optimizing your equipment has never been easier (yes easier).

Why you may ask? You can thank the military for this since this new technology was originally designed by the military to track bullets and missiles and those systems have finally made it to golfers tracking their golf ball's flight and the specifics of the impact collision.

As a golf pro, long time golf teacher and golfer myself  I'm really excited to share these advancements with you to improve your game and equipment. In my own teaching I've de-prioritized the swing style of a golfer to focus on the impact numbers the radar gives us. And it's not just me, friends and colleagues, who were the "early adopters" and investors in the technology tell me the same thing, they teach less about swing style now and more about the bottom line, what's happening at impact. Nor more guessing and straight to the fix!

The Alameda Golf Complex is on the verge getting this technology delivered so you'll be able to see your measurements like launch angle, face direction and club path (over 20 data points). Even more you can cross that information with your actual ball flight onto our range rather than see it go into a net four yards in front of you. This is huge as any advanced player will tell you. Numbers can lie and don't necessarily create the perfect match for you since there so many other variables to consider for you to love your equipment (sound, flight, feel and trust).

We'll be fitting and teaching with the Foresight system so you too can get optimized like a tour player and get the most out of your game and your equipment.

Some fitting facts that directly benefit you that we in the industry didn't even know or had to guess at until the last year or two is the massive affect of missing the sweet spot by as little as 1/2 inch can cost you 7 yards in distance. And here's a few more fun facts about the new ball flight laws:

  • If you strike down too steeply on your irons you actually lose energy with contact on the ball
  • By simply moving more weight toward the inside of the club (the heel) you will hit more draws or hooks and visa-versa. You'll see this adjustment now on the new Callaway driver for instance
  • There is a ideal match of launch angle and ball spin that is different for each golfer and can make immediate distance gains of 15 yards plus
This week we're just getting in all the new equipment for fitting and demos. We'll be carrying all the top brands in drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons and wedges. And we hope to have it all available by mid-March.

So plan a visit soon to our Chuck Corica Golf Complex driving range to see the radar technology. It will blow your mind and get you excited for playing more golf this year.

Great Senior Golfer, Gordie Kono of Alameda, Back in Action!

Gordie Kono, back doing what he loves and poised to break age in scoring

Inspiration is always a good thing. Recently I spent a few hours with an old friend from Alameda High School (1979, go Hornets), Kirk Kono and his father Gordie Kono. Time with them inspired me and I hope will you too.

Quick background, Gordie is a very good golfer and even at 80 can shoot in the 70's. Kirk is a chip-off-the-old-block and even with a 12 hour work day with a big company in Los Angeles can roll out of bed and hit a three iron onto a green from 190 yards. I usually visit with the Kono family during the Christmas holiday. Last year during our visit, Gordie had told me he had to stop playing golf because of a pain complication in his neck and doctors couldn't give him a clear answer at the time if he could play pain free again. If you can picture a sad dog, that was him. Everything about him sort of drooped with sadness not really knowing if he could ever play again. Fast forwarding a year,he had a successful surgery, no pain and he's hitting balls again.

So here we are on the range and I get to see him hitting the ball again. He was hitting nice little draws with his driver and I'm pumping him with compliments. But he didn't look really pleased. "Gordie, what's up, you didn't like that one? What's wrong with that?" I said. "They're only going 180 if I could only get another ten yards...". And that is what I'm going to share with you, who doesn't want ten more yards?

First off that's the funny thing about golfers, even if he was hitting it 300 yards he probably would have said gosh if only could get another ten years. Really more importantly, and big picture of this article, he's back doing what he loves and wants to get better and now he's asking me as a coach, what I can do to get better? And that's the beauty of passion but it also ties in with readers who are looking for a better golf game for 2014!

Now let's start with the time of year, it's winter and unless you live in Hawaii or Florida you're probably not thinking a lot about golf right now (unless you've been out of the game a year like Gordie). Most of us are in a hibernated golf state and that's fine this time of year. Still you don't want to completely regress and have to rebuild from the ground up in May. This will be about doing exercises in three phases so you ready to play well whenever you ready to get back at it.

Word of caution, whether you're coming back from a long lay off or an injury take it slow coming back. Going full speed at drivers is explosive and getting to 100% is a process, so be patient. Case in point, when Tiger was rehabbing back from his surgically repaired knee he hit balls at 20 to 30% speed for months (that's great for timing practice by-the-way).

Now to hit it further there is a formula for maxing out your distance and it is a combination of these factors:

  1. Physics of Ball Flight- Are you compressing the ball in the middle of the face with optimum club delivery into golf ball (approach angle and path)?. Analysed by ball flight and launch monitor this would also help determine if you have the right driver.
  2. Kinetic Sequence- Are you maxing out your kinetic sequence (timing of power transfer from hips to
shoulders to arms to club)? A $5 app called Golf Mtrx will let you know. The "step drill" shown in this drill by Sean Foley is a great way to dial in the timing of your power sequence.
  3. Fitness Level- What's your horsepower? Can it be improved?

One of the great golf resources is the Titleist Performance Institute's library of videos and articles on fitness and bio-mechanics. It really has everything you need to know for golf fitness and bio-mechanics whether you are tour player or annual hacker. I'm a certified trainer for TPI and I'm still a huge fan of what is available (and it's FREE).

TPI is overwhelming at first but hang in there and think you'll find it worth the time. The button "Advanced Filter/Search" will get you to where you want to be (eg this search was for core exercises). BTW- If you're a member of gym already and invest in a trainer. Aside from him prescribing a personalized regiment for you he will motivate you to stay on your program and help you manage the ramping up progression.

  • Phase 1- Off-season and assuming you are like most golfers, you are not playing much. This phase is about light work outs to keep up a modest base or foundation so moving to phase 2 isn't such a shock to your system.
  • Phase 2- Tampering into on-season. Increase work- out effort and hitting more balls.
  • Phase 3- In-season work outs and a full schedule of golf and golf events.
So where ever you I will give you a general strategy on to move forward. Let's start with Phase 1.

I'm in this phase right now. I have played a couple times in the last two months and have been going to the gym maybe two days a week for 30 minute light workouts. My keys to maintain fitness this time of year is light cardio such as walking briskly or the like on a trend mill, trail or on a bike. Hey if you can do more, great but just getting your heartbeat up for some time is good.

During the walk I'll usually doing some push-ups or push-up planks (for core), stretches and squats (for glutes). The trail that I hike is uphill so I get a cardio workout too.

In phase 2 I'm simply building up frequency of work outs while also hitting range balls more often. In this phase you should you have good basic strength and flexibility and you could be doing more explosion drills like box jumps or jumping jacks.

In this phase I may cross train by tossing footballs, a Frisbee and playing tennis. These sports will force me to start doing more explosive type actions to hit or throw the object.

These days the new rage from top trainers is having their golfers walk a tightrope to develop strength and balance (try that).

Phase 3 just continues the progression. You are able to do your workouts at a high level without being sore for a week after. I feel comfortable now swinging all-out at a driver and I feel energized walking and playing 18 holes.

So back to Gordie, my advice for him to get ten more yards is to find a few exercises through the TPI site that address more power. In this link I created a search for "power" and for the the "core" part of the body, here was the result which has some helpful exercises, http://www.mytpi.com/exercises#filter?area=fitness&page=1&category=power&body=core

So for some of you this may be too much work, no worries, just go out and play :)
